附錄一：文本與曲調考據

〈While Shepherds Watched Their Flocks by Night〉是一首直接取材自《路加福音》2:8–14的聖誕聖詩。歌詞最早見於1700年倫敦出版的 A Supplement to the New Version of Psalms，當時題為「Song of the Angels at the Nativity of our Blessed Saviour」。原版將今日的六節歌詞排成三節，每節八行。

傳統上一向將這首聖詩歸於納厄姆・泰特；《The Hymnal 1940》亦依此傳統署名。不過，現代聖詩學研究指出，1700年原刊並沒有在這首詩下面直接標明泰特的名字。由於該詩集與泰特及尼古拉斯・布雷迪（Nicholas Brady，1659–1726）所編《新編大衛詩篇》（New Version of the Psalms）有密切關係，因此若按最嚴格的歷史考據，其個別作者並不能完全確證；然而「納厄姆・泰特」仍是歷代聖詩集最普遍的傳統署名。 《The Hymnal 1940》所採用的曲調為 WINCHESTER OLD。此曲最早見於托馬斯・埃斯特（Thomas Est）1592年出版的 The Whole Booke of Psalmes，當時用於《詩篇》第84篇。原刊標有「G. 納厄姆・泰特（Nahum Tate，1652–1715）

泰特生於愛爾蘭都柏林，畢業於都柏林三一學院，是詩人、劇作家及聖詩作者。他於1692年出任英格蘭桂冠詩人（Poet Laureate），1702年又獲任命為王室史官（Royal Historiographer）。

在教會音樂史上，他最重要的工作是與愛爾蘭聖職人員尼古拉斯・布雷迪合作編寫 A New Version of the Psalms of David（1696）。這部韻文化《詩篇》在英國教會中影響甚大。〈While Shepherds Watched Their Flocks by Night〉則成為泰特流傳最廣的聖誕聖詩。

這首詩最大的特色是幾乎完全依循《路加福音》2:8–14的敘事次序，不作大量神學性的自由發揮，而將牧人、天使顯現、救主降生的宣告以及「在至高之處榮耀歸與上帝」依次寫成簡潔而容易歌唱的普通格律詩歌。因此，它既是聖誕聖詩，也是相當典型的「聖經經文韻文化」（metrical paraphrase of Scripture）。
